Chinese Opera: The Festival of Opera of Peking
El Instituto Confucio de la UADY has been part of UADY Global since 2008, providing students with access to learning not only the Chinese language, but to learning about Chinese Culture as well. During these years, wonderful business relationships have been forged between students from UADY and China. Every year, there is a celebration of the Chinese New Year in Merida. Now, we are privileged to have a Chinese opera here in Yucatan.

First Merida Saint Patrick’s Irish Festival March 14, 15, 16 & 17
This Festival is important to both Mexicans and Irish because, in 1846, the Batallón de San Patricio (Saint Patrick’s Battalion) fought with Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Most of this battalion had deserted or defected from the United States Army. Their original countries of origin included: Ireland, and Germany, as well as Canada, England, France, Italy, Poland, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, and Mexico. Most of its members were members of the Catholic Church. Their ranks also included a number of escaped slaves from the Southern United States. This will be the first Saint Patrick’s Irish Festival ever to be celebrated in the city of Merida, and it will be organized by Hennessy’s Irish Pub and Heineken, with support from the Merida City Hall and Patronato del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Mérida.

Concert: Academic Chamber Orchestra of CEMUS
This performance is by one of our wonderful groups in the Youth Orchestra System of Yucatan and is part of the Fifth Official Concert Season. Please do go out and see what a great future Yucatan has on this part of the world stage. Director: Jaime Lara. Soloists: Maria Jose Alonzo, Ruth Coyoc, and Manuel Gil del Prado.

Dance: Latin Passion
This performance includes international folk dances, as well as dances from Yucatan and Mexico, and invites the audience to take a journey through several countries in Latin America. The director of the Yucatan Chamber Choir is Maestro Jonathan Rentaria, and the director of the Crystal Music Group is Maestro Alberto Leon. Directing the Folkloric Ballet of the State of Yucatan will be Raul Castillo.

Floral Offering: Day of the Trovador 2014
This is the day that trova lovers meet at the Monumento a los Creadores del Cementerio General to lay a wreath in honor of the troubadours who have passed away. This year, the remains of Trovador Juan Pablo Manzanero will be laid to rest with the rest of Yucatan’s great trova interpretors.

Call for Donations: II Evolucion Spay/ Neuter Clinic in Uman March 30
Goal: 100 animals spayed or neutered, with more expected
Cost per animal: $400 pesos, which covers the cost of surgical supplies, anti-parasite meds, follow-up meds and additional vaccinations and antibiotics if required. Most animals get their nails trimmed and their ears cleaned. Vets, vet techs, vet students and volunteers donate their time.
Sponsorship: Can you sponsor one animal? Can you ask your friends to sponsor one animal? Evolucion will send donors, via email, a photo of each animal that they helped sterilize.
