And yet these people maintain their good cheer, with a combination of humility, acceptance, and work ethic. Their connection to the earth and sky seems to give them strength, and the hope for rain and new life – expressed most vividly in a through-story of a young couple expecting their first child – doesn’t waver even when they have no choice but to leave their land, temporarily, in a mass exodus.

Movie: Heart of the Sky, Heart of the Earth
The film follows six young Maya into their daily and ceremonial life, revealing their determination to resist the destruction of their culture and environment. Bobby, any excursion into the Yucatan Peninsula is bound to be an adventure of some sort, and it sounds like you had a good one! In any case, we apologize about the fair. We get our information from the official Yucatan website. However, in anything having to do with the indigenous culture of the Mayas, the dates are never set in stone and can be changed by the town based on the weather or the stars or things we just aren't aware of. Also, they may have had the fair the night before and there will be no evidence the next morning... they are very good that way. They may have had the fair but decided to tell you that they didn't. It's so hard to know, you know? So, as I said, it's always an adventure. We will put a notice above the announcements from now on, in your honor!

This is addressed to the editor of the events page: I live in Tulum and have enjoyed the listings of events in and about the Yucatan... music, ballet etc. So when I saw this listing (Yucatan Living Opichen Fiesta: February 23 – February 27. Opichen is just west of Muna and borders on the State of Campeche. This is a traditional “county fair.” Look here for great leatherwork.), I rented a comfortable coche and a friend, and I headed out to the county fair. It was a lengthy drive but lovely... all the little pueblos on the way so clean and calm, lovely people. We stopped in Mora (sic... maybe Muna?) for lunch and on the menu... well there was no menu, but they had a great chicken soup. We asked the proprietor about the fiesta and he knew nothing, but we were not daunted. Until we got to Mama. The chef said the road to Opichen was "horrible" and we shouldn't attempt it, but we were going to a fair and look for leather goods just like the listing said. 5 minutes up the road a pot hole decimated a rim and tire on the rented coche. Again we were not daunted... all part of the days adventure of "getting out of Dodge". We changed the tire and off we went, down a tree covered road that was charming and we were looking for the fiesta. We found nothing, so we asked the locals and they looked at us like, "oh those crazy gringos". After a little more searching and some very nice conversation and offers to sell land, we realized there was no fair, and the locals didn't remember there ever being a fair. Had a nice drive and stopped for dinner at Taverna Friars (sp?) in Valladolid, but now how can I trust this column that I have come to love..¿?¿
