School Begins Today

Ligia Camara School of Music Opens Today!
Yucatan lost this jazz, blues and trova icon not long ago, but she will forever be part of the musical heart of the people of the entire state and far beyond. This school is going to be wonderful, especially with the quality of the teaching staff. Can you imagine being taught by the likes of Fernando Leal, Aaron Cu Fernandez or Edwin Schirp Magana? If you are interested in classes, do stop by what is soon to become one of the best music schools in all of Latin America! Disciplines initially taught at the Ligia Camara School of Music include acoustic and electric piano, classical and trova guitar, and all levels of classical violin.

Registration: Free for children (age 7 and older) and for adults of any age.
Cost Per Class: $100 pesos per class, with two classes required per week.

Movie: Cumbres
(Mexico 2013) Due to a tragedy, two sisters abruptly flee from their hometown. Miwi, the younger one, with no clear idea of what happened, drives untiringly to save her sister Juliana, implicating her in the misadventure. Their journey creates a bittersweet relationship marked by pain, guilt and love. In Spanish.

Movie: Clash of the Titans
(United Kingdom 1981). Director: Desmond Davis. Starring Ursula Andress, Claire Bloom, Laurence Olivier and Burgess Meredith. This is a film adaption of the myth of Perseus and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster to save the Princess Andromeda.

Japanese Horror Film: Imprint (Masters of Horror)
(Japan 2006). Director: Takashi Milke. This is the 13th episode of a Japanese television series. Christopher (Billy Drago), a Victorian era American journalist, is traveling through Japan looking for Komomo (Itô), a lost girlfriend whom he had promised to rescue from prostitution and bring to America. Landing on an island populated solely by whores and their masters, he is solicited by a syphilitic tout (Yamada). He claims no knowledge of Komomo, but Christopher has to spend the night, requesting the company of a girl (Youki Kudoh) lurking back in the shadows, who joins him in his room. Disfigured and disturbed, the girl claims a closer connection with the dead than the living.

Music: The Standards of My Land
This performance is under the direction of Carlos Rodriguez. It features traditional compositions from Yucatan with a modern jazz arrangement (guitar, bass and drums) without taking anything away from either the old or the new music. What results is a unique sound that works as a bridge between traditional and contemporary music that is bringing new generations to the music of Yucatan.

(Japan 2000). Director: Higuchinsky. Based on Junji Ito's episodic manga of the same name. The plot concerns a town infected with malevolent spirals. This abstract concept manifests in grotesque ways, such as a teenager's long hair beginning to curl and take over her mind, or a corpse winding around itself.

Japanese Horror Film: Horror of Malformed Men

Wildlife Photo Master Class

Miraculous Medal Race - November 23
This running event is open to the general public and is being held as a benefit for the Chelem Chapel. The course is approximately 14 miles long. Prizes have not yet been announced, but will be announced as the race draws near. Categories include: free, master, submaster, male and female veterans, and veterans plus wheel chair. There will also be additional events, such as 5K hikes, walks, etc., so there is something here for everyone. This event is under the direction of the Institute of Sport (IDEY).

Second Annual White City Ball - Saturday, October 18
This is the annual AANY fundraiser. AANY is Artistas / Artisanos Nuevos de Yucatan A.C. , a legal Mexican non-profit run by both Yucatecan and foreign volunteers to identify, promote and market fine craft artists in the three states of the Yucatan Peninsula.
