Need to Renew Your US Passport?

Ask the U.S. Consul - Passports

As many U.S. citizens in the Yucatán Peninsula travel for the holidays, now is a good time to make sure you have your passport handy and check its expiration date. If you do need to renew or replace a passport before you travel, we encourage you to apply as early as possible as it can take up to two weeks to receive it after submitting your application (or longer if you submit your application to one of our Consular Agencies in Cancun, Cozumel, or Playa del Carmen).

Renewing a passport is straightforward, especially if you have your old passport. To renew your passport:

1. Fill out an application form.
2. Schedule an appointment.
3. Appear at the Consulate for your appointment. Please bring with you (i) your current passport, (ii) your completed (but unsigned) application, and (iii) two recent 2x2 inch color photos on a white background. If you have passport photos taken somewhere in Mexico, please be sure to tell the photographer the size required - passport photos for Mexican passports are smaller than the acceptable size.
4. Pay the appropriate fee. Renewal fees are $105 USD for applicants under the age of 16 and $110 USD for those 16 years and older.

Of course, we can also help you if you just need to add extra blank pages to your current valid passport or if your passport has been lost or stolen.

If your passport has been lost or stolen, in addition to the application form and passport photos mentioned above, you will also need to fill out Form DS-64 (“Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport”). Be sure also to bring photo identification (e.g., a driver’s license or other state-issued ID) with you to your appointment. As with passport renewals, fees vary depending on the age of the applicant and service requested.

We encourage you to visit the Consulate’s website for more information regarding all of the passport services we offer.

From all of us at the U.S. Consulate General Mérida, we wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Kathy, you can get your passport photo taken at Walmart, I believe. Anyone else have suggestions?

I need to renew my passport in Playa del Carmen in early October but I can’t seem to find out where I can get my passport photo’s taken. I looked on Google but they didn’t come up with anything. I emailed the Consulate but never heard anything back….do you know any places?
    Thank you,
    Kathy Davis

Robert, we suggest you email these questions directly to the Consulate. If you remember, let us know what you find out!

    Can you provide two details.
--how soon before the expiration date can you apply?
--what is the processing time to receive the new passport, assuming all the paperwork is done properly?

    Thanks
