A Benefit for Merida's Pets
This Friday December 1st, AFAD, which stands for Albergue Franciscano del Animal Desprotegido (Franciscan Shelter for Vulnerable Animals), is having a benefit dinner party to raise money. The party will start at 8:00 PM and will be located at a private home on Calle 22 #197 x 13 in Garcia Gineres. The cost to attend is $150 pesos per person. The money will all go to benefit the cats and dogs that are cared for at the AFAD shelter.
If you don't know about AFAD, read our article about the dog shelter run by this group. If you want to help the dogs and cats that are rescued by this worthy and hard working team, please contact Lidia at either her home (920-5019) or at her cell phone (044-9999-47-63-19).
The group is raising money to build roofs over the shelter pens so that the rescued dogs can stay dry when it rains. They also need money to outfit their operating room so they can increase their spaying and neutering operations, which they conduct with local vets at no or reduced fees. Any additional money will go to the ongoing costs of feeding and caring for the 30 to 40 dogs and 20 or so cats that the shelter cares for at any one time.
If you don't want to call, just show up at the event. If you don't want to go to the event, but want to donate money, just call Lidia. If you want to adopt a dog, please go to AFAD and rescue your companion from the shelter. If you don't speak Spanish but want to do something, contact us at blog@yucatanliving.com.
The work of AFAD is not just about rescuing the dogs and cats from lives of starvation or abuse, but also about educating the local people about improving the care of our animal friends. Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help.

My name is Jessica and I am a Yucateca like we say in Merida. I have been living in Detroit Michigan for 7 years and I love animals. I adopted one dog 5 years ago and he is the best dog I could have.
Right now I am kind of complicated because I don't have a job but I would like to help dogs or any animal from my home town. I am going to have an online store of hammocks from Yucatan and I would like to have a link to help you with donations. People in the USA help animals more than in Mexico and it could be a chance to have a link with a picture and small explanation of what you do to help these dogs or cats.

He is precious, isn't he? That is a photo taken of our dog, URL, two days after we found him starving and dying on the side of the road just outside of Taxco. He's a LOT bigger than that now! (Click on his photo to see more recent pictures).

You made my day with this article! I love dogs, have two myself and was worried about the treatment of animals there and if there was a "shelter" type organization. By the way, that puppy is precious!!!!! Thanks for the article.
