Exposition: Habanerorama

Call for Participating Artists -Deadline May 15
This call is for visual artists, both Yucateco and foreigners, who live in Merida to submit work to the International Festival of Contemporary Art in Apilles Province, France. The festival itself will not take place until July 4 – August 31, 2014, but it is time to collect and judge the works submitted. These works can be paintings, sculptures, graphics, photography, video-art and installations that are in harmony with the work of Goya. Submissions should be sent, in digital form, to convocatoria.apart2014@gmail.com, along with a CV, and proof of one individual and two collective exhibitions.

Invitation: Opening of the Exhibition: Oaxaca en Nahualli: May 8 to 24
This exhibition is an amazing collection of prints from Oaxaca. They will be showing more than 400 pieces of art this month.
May 8: In collaboration with the Merida English Library, the La Artesa collection will be shown. This event will include a wine tasting.

Admission: $300 pesos
May 9: More collections will be opened and your invitation includes a delicious tasting of 7 kinds of Oaxacan moles. This is a special event that requires a reservation because space is limited. However, this night is well worth attending because you will be able to participate in a raffle of a beautiful print by one of the most important Masters from Oaxaca. After this day, the Oaxacan prints will be available in the Nahualli Gallery for view and/or purchase.

If you haven’t been to Valladolid in a while, this festival is a great excuse to go visit. The events are all so special and underscore why this festival is growing into one of the best in all of Yucatan.

Mass will be celebrated by Señor Monseñor Joaquín Vázquez Ávila. Participating choirs will be from Merida and Valladolid. They will be accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Merida.

This performance is billed as a Conciertode by the Banda Sinfónica Juvenil de la Secretaría de la Cultura y las Artes de Yucatán. It is a long name for a wonderful group. Please come and support them as they grow into one of the best youth symphony bands in the world. They will be led by Maestro Luis Luna Guarneros.

Music: Frozen, The Musical
This is a repeat performance, due to the success of the April performance. They have toured Mexico with the music of one of the favorite animated films of the year and were kind enough to bring the show back to Merida because the audience loved it so much the first time.

Music: Mayab Jazz
Well, they just can’t help it in Yucatan. Sooner or later, it all comes down to trova and/or jazz. What a wonderful way to feel! If you look back at some of the old Maya songs, you’ll see that they just might have invented jazz long before anyone else. Tonight’s performance is under the direction of Rene Monterrosa.

Ligia Camara in Jazz and Yucateca Song
This is a performance that will bring tears to the eyes of those who lost our friend just this past year. Ligia Camara was in a class by herself, as a woman and as a musician. This tribute will be in the hands of those who loved her and who worked with her to bring more joy to audiences than anyone could ever have expected. Featured tonight are Maricarmen Pérez, Maru Boeta, Cony Ancona, Mario Esquivel Ríos and his group, along with Pedro Carlos Herrera and his group. At tonight’s event, there will be a presentation of a new CD of Ligia Camara’s work, in both song and poetry. The audio-visual presentation will include the great lady herself, as well as Los 3 Yucatecos. Maestro Luis Pérez Sabido is the conductor and artistic director for this event.

119th Anniversary of the Fall of Jose Marti

Program 12: From Pomp and Circumstance to Romance, May 23 & 25. Guest director for this performance is Jose Guadalupe Flores, with featured artist Alexander Ovcharov (Oboe) as featured artist. Music includes the Military March of Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (Elgar), and Concierto for Oboe (Williams), then on to Tchaikovsky for the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Francesca da Rimini Op. 32. What a night!

XXVII Marathon of the Marina 2014: June 8
This marathon has grown to be one of the largest in Yucatan. The prize pool this year is more than $500,000 pesos, and includes two compact cars, two motorcycles, and trips to the Riviera Maya. The marathon will be a total distance of 42.195 km and the half-marathon will be 21 km. Registration: May 5 to June 6.

    Cesar - I love writing this page... and do tend to get carried away with my event descriptions this time of year - but this is the time when the best of the best - world famous - couldn't find better if you tried - artists are performing in Merida... almost every performance is a "must see" in the weeks leading up to summer break. Do try to see as many as you can.
