This Week... starting July 07, 2014

In The City

We wanted everyone to know that, while we grown-ups are resting during the week before Summer Vacation begins, the city and state are hard at work. This week and next weekend, they are holding art classes for children in almost every municipality in the state. We cannot imagine the numbers of brushes, sponges, cotton balls, and toothpicks it will take to get through it, not to even mention the numbers of teachers (!), but we are certain that every child who wants to paint will have the opportunity to create a masterpiece!

Literature and writing are also huge topics for kids this week because there is a state contest going on. This is the fifth year for this particular contest, so the kids are primed and ready to write. They have an amazing number of writing workshops being held for these very young authors this week.

For kids who are more interested in how things work, Yucatan has its own “Science Guy,” in the person of Maestro Wilbert Camara, who manages to make it to Centro Cultural Jose Marti on Saturday and to the Museum of Natural History on Sundays to teach workshops about a whole range of things that tend to create smoke, smell strangely, or cause one’s hair to stand on end (electrified bubbles this week (!)). The kids love him and Yucatan keeps right on educating those marvelous engineers and other scientists, so somebody must be having a good time somewhere along the way!
