Los Tres Caballeros en Chichén Itzá
Creemos que, de alguna manera, es nuestro deber mencionar que hoy los tres hombres más poderosos de América del Norte visitaron la atracción turística más importante de Yucatán: la antigua ciudad maya de Chichén Itzá. Si quieren la historia completa, pueden buscarla en Google y tal vez encontrar el artículo de Associated Press del cual “tomamos prestada” la foto que mostramos aquí. Echen un buen vistazo a la imagen y notarán algo que probablemente ningún turista haya visto jamás. No hay absolutamente nadie más cerca de la pirámide de El Castillo. De hecho, no se permitió la entrada de ningún otro turista en todo el parque. Más de siete millones de personas visitan Chichén Itzá cada año. Es el equivalente norteamericano del Coliseo romano o la Gran Muralla china. Sin embargo, esta mañana, solo tres personas y un grupo estrictamente controlado de seguridad y prensa pudieron entrar. Por eso, no tenemos ninguna foto propia que mostrarles ni historia que contar. Entendemos que el presidente Fox de México estaba promoviendo el turismo. Probablemente no fue fácil convencer al presidente Bush, a quien no le gusta viajar ni hacer turismo, de desviarse dos horas para una sesión de fotos. Pero ¿qué tipo de mensaje de mercadotecnia es ese, si el lugar se ve desierto?
Habiendo dicho todo eso, hubo un día glorioso, el 13 de junio de 2002, cuando regresábamos del Caribe hacia Mérida con nuestros hijos que estaban de visita, y una tormenta eléctrica tremenda azotó la carretera, con lluvia tan intensa que inundó el camino y tuvimos que orillarnos. Justo coincidió que estábamos en la salida hacia Chichén Itzá, y como los niños querían verla, manejamos lentamente por el pueblo de Pisté y llegamos al parque justo a la hora del cierre. Les explicamos a los encargados de los boletos que con gusto pagaríamos la entrada completa si nos dejaban pasar solo 15 minutos, y aceptaron.
Y así fue como nosotros también tuvimos la suerte de tener toda la antigua ciudad maya de Chichén Itzá para nosotros solos, y así fue como tomamos esta foto:

Using as justification the Trilateral Meeting between the leaders of North America to come to the Mexican Southeast, the man who has earned repudiation from millions around the world descended in his airplane at an airport close to the Archaeological Zone of Chichen Itza to visit the pyramids before returning to Cancun. The legendary owners of these lands were angry over the visit of the mass murderer because they consider it disrespectful to their ceremonial center. They were saying, "How come they let a person like this climb the pyramids, but they don't let us do so or even enter the park?"
The security measures that were taken to enclose several miles around the park prevented the people in local towns from moving about freely and caused economic losses to the artisans who earn their daily income offering merchandise to tourists that visit the park. The protest was led by the artisans of Chichen, who were accompanied by various groups, the majority of which are adherents of the Sixth Declaration of the Lacondon Jungle and participants of The Other Campaign, as well as others who were upset by the visit.
