Numerous pieces of New Guinea art hang in the world's great art museums as examples of the aesthetic brilliance that humans have achieved in even the smallest of societies. Yet, only a small number of New Guinea communities were responsible for most of this artistic production; most were largely uninterested in visual art of any kind. Why should this be? In this talk, Paul ("Jim") Roscoe surveys New Guinea art to identify who exactly produced it, the circumstances in which they produced it, and why. The answer continues to echo through nation-states today.
